What should I expect from a massage or body work session?
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork. Various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, application of pressure to specific points, just to name a few. During your massage, you can expect broad, flowing strokes to help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure is gradually increased to relax specific areas to relieve areas of muscular tension. Of course, each massage therapist will discuss your specific needs prior to your session. That way, they’re better able to give you the kind of therapy you need most. You should tell your therapist immediately if you feel and discomfort so another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when you body is not resisting.

How do I prepare for a massage?
When you come for your first massage, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out a general health questionnaire. It’s necessary to determine major health problems, medications, allergies, state of pregnancy, and recent accidents, and is essential for planning a safe and effective massage session. If you work out first, please shower before your appointment. It’s best not to eat a large meal or consume alcohol before your massage as it may cause some discomfort during the session. We also recommend that you not work out immediately following your massage. Oils and lotions are often used during a massage to prevent skin chaffing, so please let your therapist know if you have any allergies that might be triggered by the lubrication. At Synergy, we use a hypoallergenic gel that is virtually scentless. If you are under a doctor’s care we strongly advise you to obtain a written recommendation for a massage and bodywork prior to any session.
